Balance

If you've seen our posts, no doubt you've seen the word "balance" more than once. But what does balance really mean? How do you know if you're eating a balanced diet? What does it mean to live a balanced life? Let's break it down here.

Defining #balance

This one word can be found in nutrition posts all over the web and social media. Experts and programs promote having a balanced diet and a balanced lifestyle. Balance is literally defined as "having different elements in equal proportions". Does this mean your diet should have equal amounts of vegetables and whole grains? Not necessarily. Should you eat the same amount of apples and cookies each day? Probably not. 

Balance in regards to health and nutrition relates more to the definition "enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady". Having balance enables you to live your best life and remain on a positive course while still enjoying the things you love. Balanced diets are focused on the good stuff (vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, etc.) and also save room for the fun stuff that you love to eat. That isn't to say you don't enjoy eating fruits and vegetables, but means that you shouldn't completely cut yourself off from your favorite foods (see our post Philosophy 101 for more on this). 

Finding Balance

A balanced diet is centered on our 9 food categories: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, lean proteins, probiotics, extra, boost, and water. These foods should make up a large majority of the diet and are the main focus of daily meals. However, balance means enjoying food and enjoying your life. Balance is a LIFESTYLE. Fueling your body with the things that make you thrive and also saving some room for the foods you truly love. Enjoying a cookie if that's what you're craving. Having a slice of pizza because it's your favorite food. Fully savoring every bite. Knowing that you're not ruining your life by allowing yourself to eat the foods that you love. 

When you find balance in your life, you feel good in your own skin. Find what works best for you. Being healthy doesn't require you to eat a kale salad every day. Healthy is a lifestyle where you have a positive relationship with food. We focus on the positive nourishment that you're adding into your life because that is what matters most. The other things you include are up to you. Balance may be different for everyone. Allow yourself to live. "Don't miss out on 95% of life to weigh 5% less". Be happy and LIVE. You are worth it.
